Description

A facsimile-style version of the first edition of John Masefield’s second volume of poetry Ballads (1903). Including the poem 'Cargoes' which John Betjeman stated would be "remembered as long as the language lasts".

Introduced by Philip W Errington Department of Printed Books and Manuscripts Sotheby’s and visiting fellow University of London

Detailed Description

After Ballads in 1903, Masefield did not publish another volume of verse until Ballads and Poems in 1910. Volumes of short stories, naval histories, novels and plays were to appear, but no poetry. Therefore Ballads represents an aspect of Masefield's beginnings as a writer and the end of his early published poetry.
