Of long-standing Herefordshire stock, John Philips was born on 30 December 1676 and died thirty-three years later in 1709. Philip's poetry is not well-known, excpet to eighteenth-century scholars, and so the republication, in a new edition, of his major work, Cyder: A Poem in Two Books, represents an opportunity for a poem with strong regional connections to receive a wider readership.
